Class: Anatomy of a Sock
Instructor: Bethany Harper
90 minutes every-other week for 4 weeks
Knitted socks are fashionable, customizable, and small projects you can take on the go!
On the other hand, knitting the socks sounds daunting, makes knitters run in fear, and can cause the dreaded “second sock” syndrome.
The knitting part is really not as complicated as it seems. Depending on the pattern, a lot of sock knitting is plain stockinette stitch in the round for several inches above the heel and then again before the toe.
The tricky techniques in knitting a sock tend to fall into these categories:
Knitting the correct size
Knitting the heel
Grafting the toe (in a top down sock)
Casting on (in a toe up sock)
Those techniques will be the focus of this class. We will identity the anatomy of the sock, knit a heel flap and gusset, practice the trusty kitchener stitch to graft our toes closed, learn Judy’s Magic Cast On for toe up socks, and discuss gauge and taking foot measurements.
The end goal will be that after mastering these tricky sock parts, you will have the confidence to knit socks you can wear or share with pride!
Materials
Yarn: 100g skein of Worsted weight yarn (should be more than enough)
Fingering weight yarn—does not need to be a full 100g skein, this will be for swatching*
Needles:
DPNs, Flexi Flips, or 32-40” circulars for Magic Loop in your preferred size for working with worsted weight yarn
*You will also need needles for swatching fingering weight yarn. These can be circular or straight point needles. The swatches will be knit flat so you do not need to use DPNs. You may want to knit in a few different sizes from US 0—US 3
Notions:
Tapestry needle
Locking stitch markers
Non locking stitch markers
Beginning of round marker (or a non locking marker of a different color)
Highlighter tape
